Return of the Valkyrie

TEASER

Caption: One Year Later.

Lord Erick leads a group of Viking through the Eastwind bog.

LORD ERICK
This way.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Beowulf and his son Wiglaf move through the Eastwind bog.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lord Erick and the Vikings move through the bog.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Beowulf and Wiglaf run through the bog.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lord Erick and the Vikings arrive before Gabrielle, still protected by Brunnhilda's flame.

LORD ERICK
Lady of the Ring, the legend of your beauty does
you no justice. Your destiny has arrived.

He draws his sword.

LORD ERICK
I have come to save you.

Beowulf and Wiglaf run in.

BEOWULF
Lord Erick! My lord...this is madness. You cannot
penetrate the ring of fire. Only Gabrielle's soul
mate can pass through the flames. All other flesh...

He removes his glove to show his hand covered in burns.

BEOWULF
...is doomed.

LORD ERICK
A boar on a spit has reason to fear the flame, not
a Viking lord.

BEOWULF
That is not the only thing that stands in your way.

LORD ERICK
I should worry about getting mud on my boots?

Monster Grinhilda enters behind him.

BEOWULF
Actually, that is not what I was referring to.

Monster Grinhilda roars and hits Lord Erick away. The Vikings fight Monster Grinhilda, who beats them all one by one.

BEOWULF
Lord Erick, call them off!

Monster Grinhilda picks up a Viking and rips off his arms. Beowulf moves to Lord Erick and grabs him by the collar.

BEOWULF
Call your men off. This is suicide!

LORD ERICK
Ra-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-ah!

He gets up and runs into Brunnhilda's flame, and is burned to nothing as he screams.

BEOWULF
To the ship!

The Vikings flee. They walk along.

BEOWULF
We must return with them to Denmark.

WIGLAF
You're giving up?

BEOWULF
No, I'm seeking help from an old friend.

WIGLAF
King Hrothgar.

BEOWULF
If any mortal can defeat the demons in this cursed
bog, it is Hrothgar.

Wiglaf moves on ahead. Beowulf looks at Gabrielle.

BEOWULF
I will return, Gabrielle...I promise you.

Gabrielle lies sleeping on the rock, covered in vines and branches. Her hair has grown past her shoulder.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mountains.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mountains.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hrothgar's castle by the sea.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
It's a celebration. Beowulf and Wiglaf enter.

WIGLAF
Hey! It looks like we arrived in time for some kind
of party.

He bumps into Villager.

WIGLAF
O-oh. Excuse me.

BEOWULF
What conquest are you people celebrating?

VILLAGER
The conquest of King Hrothgar's heart, sir. He's
marrying the noble and fair Wealthea.

BEOWULF
Hm-m. Thank you

The Villager moves off.

WIGLAF
Wealthea - that's not a Norse name.

BEOWULF
Hm-m.

WIGLAF
I wonder what it means.

BEOWULF
My guess would be that it's uh, Celtic for...

Doors open and Xena enters riding a cow lead by two women, with four others surrounding it. She is wearing a white and gold dress, a small sword in her lap and a small gold crown on her head. She is smiling.

BEOWULF
...Warrior Princess.

Xena looks around at the people before her.

END OF TEASER

ACT ONE

The women lead the cow with Xena riding on top through the crowd.

EXTRA
Wealthea, greetings! Welcome to you!

BEOWULF
(whispering) Xena! Xena!

Xena does not hear him, or does not realize he is calling to her.

WIGLAF
Dad, I thought you said there's no way she could
have survived.

BEOWULF
I was wrong.

EXTRA
Lovely!

Xena waves to some of the people. Beowulf and Wiglaf move through the people.

WIGLAF
Uh, sorry. I'm sorry. Excuse me.

EXTRA
Hey!

Xena is helped down from the cow and moves towards Hrothgar, whose face is hidden beneath a helmet. He removes it when she steps before him. He is a larger man with a thick, red beard.

WIGLAF
Sorry. Uh, I'm sorry. Excuse me.

Beowulf and Wiglaf move through the crowd. Hildegyth watches them. Hrothgar is handed a sword.

PRIEST
Hrothgar...the ancient ritual of the exchange of
blades, seals your pledge of fidelity, to Wealthea...

Wiglaf stops Beowulf. The Priest talks in the background while Beowulf and Wiglaf talk.

WIGLAF
Beowulf! This is not the time.

BEOWULF
This changes all of our plans. Now that I have
Xena to help me save Gabrielle, I need Hrothgar
for nothing.

WIGLAF
Yeah, except his wife, whose name is Wealthea.

BEOWULF
Her name is Xena. Trust me.

WIGLAF
Xena - th--the mighty Warrior Princess. I don't
think so.

PRIEST
Make you vows.

HROTHGAR
Wealthea, I make the Viking pledge of eternal
love and devotion.

He puts the ring, attached to a sword on her finger.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Clips from "The Rheingold."

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Xena says nothing. There is murmuring and Hrothgar looks at her with worry.

XENA
I'm sorry. I, uh...

HROTHGAR
You're overcome with joy.

XENA
Yes, I'm overcome.

She chuckles and the people laugh.

BEOWULF
It was the ring. It's the ring that's changed her.

XENA
Oh-oh, um...I, Wealthea, promise to be a devoted
wife to Hrothgar and a...

XENA and PRIEST
Mother-

XENA
To his people.

She places a ring, attached to the sword she is holding onto his finger.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Clips from "The Ring."

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Xena looks up in surprise.

XENA
Oh...oh, I am the luckiest woman in Denmark!

Hrothgar laughs. The people cheer. He moves to kiss her, but she hugs him instead.

PRIEST
Let us prepare the sacrifice to the goddess Freya.

Hrothgar holds up his sword and moves to the cow. He kills it.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Eastwind Bog. The Valkyries collect the dead. Waltraute and Sieglinda move amoung them.

WALTRAUTE
Why are men so foolish?

SIEGLINDA
You think it's silly for a man to risk his life for a woman?

WALTRAUTE
A normal man with no other good use, no. But
Sven the Lion Heart? Noble John Thomas? Ingmar
the Valiant?

SIEGLINDA
Hm-m, does seem a waste of talent.

WALTRAUTE
If they died in pursuit of the ring, I'd understand.

She checks over the body of Igmar.

WALTRAUTE
But to spill their blood for the ordinary woman
who lays entrapped beside it...

She gestures to Sieglinda who helps her carry Ingmar.

SIEGLINDA
Our sister Brunnhilda turned herself to flame to
protect that Gabrielle. Perhaps she's not so ordinary.
And Xena, Xena seems to care a great deal
for her, too.

Waltraute drops the feet of the Ingmar.

WALTRAUTE
You speak the name of that conniving bitch in
the presence of heroes? Thank the gods she's
dead and fed to the fishes. Now hurry it up! Odin
wants the best of these in Valhalla by nightfall.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hrothgar's castle. People dance and celebrate. Hrothgar and some men fill their mugs.

HROTHGAR
Skoal!

EXTRA
Skoal!

They smash their mugs together and then drink. Hildegyth is before Hrothgar.

HROTHGAR
Ah-h. You've come to congratulate me at last, Hildegyth.

HILDEGYTH
You've made a terrible mistake, Brother. This
Wealthea will never care for you or our people
the way I do.

HROTHGAR
Never speak of my marriage that way again unless
you wish me to order my own sister banished!

He walks over to Xena, who is not joining in on the celebration.

HROTHGAR
You look as if this was your funeral, not your wedding.

XENA
Hrothgar...at the ceremony I had such a strange
sensation.

HROTHGAR
As did I. It besieges me whenever you are near,
and I know of only one cure for this malady.

He moves her against a wall, and puts his lips on hers, but she pulls away.

XENA
No, Hrothgar - Hrothgar, tradition says that we
cannot be together until the moon is high. Otherwise,
you would jinx our union.

HROTHGAR
I've waited so long to make you truly mine.

XENA
I know, Hrothgar. Yes, and you know that I have
been devoted to you since you pulled me from
the icy waters. But would it be so very hard to wait
just a few more hours?

HROTHGAR
I would wait even longer if I thought I had your heart
as well.

XENA
Yes, but-

He moves on her again and starts to kiss her neck.

XENA
Hrothgar, my husb--husband - Hrothgar! No.
You - our union has given me a new purpose.
You have always known that my priorities are
different than other women's.

He grabs her by the neck.

HROTHGAR
You are a Viking queen. Your priorities are as your
master decides.

He starts to kiss her neck again. Beowulf enters.

BEOWULF
Hrothgar...

HROTHGAR
Beowulf! You've come to celebrate our most...
He gently kisses Xena's cheek.

HROTHGAR
joyful day. My wife, Wealthea.

Xena turns and faces him. She curtsies.

BEOWULF
Perhaps we have met before.

She looks at him, and he looks deeply into her eyes.

XENA
I think not.

Xena walks away.

HROTHGAR
Well, women, huh?

Hrothgar follows Xena and grabs her around the waist when he catches up with her. She gasps.

HROTHGAR
Come on.

He leads her away. Hildegyth moves over to Beowulf.

HILDEGYTH
How intriguing - when you saw my sister-in-law
this evening you looked as if you'd seen a ghost
and now, she looked right through you as if you
were one.

Beowulf sighs.

BEOWULF
It's kind of a long story.

HILDEGYTH
Perhaps if you told if to the right audience you'd
get the happy ending you seek.

He faces her.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hrothgar's castle.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Xena slowly brushes her hair, a sad, sick look on her face. There's a knock on the door.

XENA
Come in, my lord.

Beowulf enters, but Xena is unaware since he wears Hrothgar's helmet. He moves over to her. Xena rises and faces him. She sees the helmet. Xena speaks in a very unhappy tone.

XENA
You wish to play a game...master?

Beowulf takes off the helmet. Xena grabs her brush and holds it like a knife in front of her as she backs away from her.

XENA
You're a lunatic. Stay away from me.

BEOWULF
Xena, your life is in danger. When Odin learns
you are alive, he will kill you and Gabrielle will
never be saved.

XENA
(whispering) Gabrielle?

BEOWULF
Please try to-

He reaches out to her.

XENA
A-a-a-a-a-ah!

She grabs him and throws him against the bed. A raven perches on the window sill and caws.

BEOWULF
Odin's raven - he already knows you are here.

The door opens. Hildegyth enters with guards and Hrothgar. Xena was facing Beowulf, who was lying on the bed as they entered.

HILDEGYTH
You see, Brother? It's as I said - she cannot give
you her heart because she's too busy giving it to
your old friend.

Beowulf stands and faces an enraged Hrothgar. Xena is shocked.

END OF ACT ONE

ACT TWO

XENA
Hrothgar, this madman has mistaken me-

HILDEGYTH
Enough. My brother has heard too many of your
false words. Seize them.

The guards grab Beowulf and Xena.

HROTHGAR
Are you absolutely certain?

HILDEGYTH
Yes.

HROTHGAR
We were as brothers, Beowulf.

He hits him and then faces Xena.

HROTHGAR
I would have loved you until the end of my lifetime.
Now it seems it'll only be until the end of yours.
Dispose of them as you choose.

He leaves.

XENA
Hrothgar...Hrothgar!

HILDEGYTH
As if I would ever have allowed my brother to share
our city with some...foreign witch. Take them to
the dungeon.

The guards start to take them away. The raven caws and leaves.

XENA
(to Beowulf) Why did you not tell him the truth?!

BEOWULF
Because I need you to help me save Gabrielle.

XENA
What for?!

Beowulf fights the guards. Xena watches. Beowulf thinks he has defeated them all and turns away. A guard rises, and Xena kicks out the feet from under Beowulf, so the sword misses his head. The guard attacks Xena and she defeats him.

BEOWULF
You see? I told you I needed you.

He holds out his hand.

BEOWULF
Please?

Beowulf transforms into Gabrielle.

GABRIELLE
I'm lost without you, Xena.

Xena looks at Gabrielle's loving eyes and takes the hand before her, which becomes Beowulf's again. He helps her up. They run out.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Boat sails.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Viking row. Xena enters, dressed in white fur. The Vikings stop rowing and murmur quietly. Some stand, looking at Xena in awe.

XENA
(to Wiglaf) What's the matter with your men? They
look like they've seen a ghost.

WIGLAF
No, not a ghost - a legend.

Beowulf moves in from the decks when he sees what is happening inside.

WIGLAF
All these men can talk of is a chance to see you
in action. To tell you the truth, I'm-

BEOWULF
About to go and polish your blade. Is that right, Wiglaf?

WIGLAF
Fine. Send me away.

He leaves. Beowulf motions for the Vikings to row again. Xena turns away.

BEOWULF
You feeling seasick?

XENA
No. But I am uneasy. I was betrothed for life and
condemned to death on the same die, by the same man.

BEOWULF
Hrothgar. He's not the man that I knew. He rescued
a beautiful woman who had lost her memory,
gave her a new name and then some lame story
about being the sole survivor of a shipwreck.

She smiles a sad smile.

XENA
I thought he loved me, and now you tell me that
this name "Wealthea" is not even my own.

BEOWULF
You are Xena.

XENA
I could have done so much good for the Viking people.

BEOWULF
The Xena I remember-

He draws his sword.

BEOWULF
-could do more good with this sword than a hundred
Viking queens could ever do. And the Xena I remember
could never forget what happened in that swamp - the
face of Gabrielle, the most loyal friend in the world.

XENA
I remember none of these things.

He attacks her with his sword, but Xena blocks him. The sword digs into the wall of the ship.

BEOWULF
You may not remember them...but they are inside you.

Xena looks at the reflection of her eyes on the blade.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Valhalla.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Waltraute and a Valkyrie train. Odin enters. Waltraute defeats the other Valkyrie and laughs.

WALTRAUTE
Odin...you missed the great skill I've achieved
in your honour.

Two other Valkyrie help up the defeated one.

ODIN
Well, you'd better get ready, Waltraute, Xena is
about to test it.

WALTRAUTE
Xena is alive?

ODIN
At this very moment, she and Beowulf are crossing
the great sea, heading towards the ring.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Xena looks over the ocean from the beach. There's an overlapping image of Gabrielle, which quickly fades. Xena starts to head back towards the Vikings.

EXTRA
You two!

Beowulf moves amoung the Vikings and looks out at Xena.

EXTRA
I told you have to hide it, right here. Put it in the
tent over there.

Wiglaf gets a ladle of water.

WIGLAF
Uh, Xena...can I offer you some water?

XENA
Yes.

VIKING #1
No! Because I'm gonna offer it to her.

WIGLAF
I don't think so.

They fight.

XENA
Please stop!

EXTRA
Here we go again!

XENA
(to another Viking) Why don't you stop them?
(yelling) That's enough!

They keep fighting. She moves between them.

XENA
Stop! Stop this! This madness! Must you seek
the merest excuse to fight?!

WIGLAF
That's what Vikings do! Fighting gives our lives meaning!

XENA
Fighting gives your lives meaning. Do you have
any idea how stupid that is?!

BEOWULF
Yeah? Well, it didn't sound stupid when it came
from you.

XENA
From me?

BEOWULF
Long ago it was Xena who first taught Odin to
embrace violence and bloodlust.

XENA
Well, if that is true then I know I am not this Xena.

Valkyries ride in from the sky.

EXTRA
Yah-h-h-h! Yah! Yah! Yah!

BEOWULF
They know who you are, and they want you dead.

END OF ACT TWO

ACT THREE

The Valkyries ride through the sky.

EXTRA
Yah! Yah!

They land on the beach and ride towards the Vikings.

EXTRA
Yah! Yah!

BEOWULF
Ready your weapons, men!

He draws his sword and the Vikings get ready for battle.

XENA
Beowulf...I won't have this resolved by violent means.

BEOWULF
It's the only means they know, or would you rather die?

XENA
Have your men put down their weapons!

Beowulf talks with a "Yeah right" tone.

BEOWULF
Xena!

XENA
If you want me to help you save your friend Gabrielle,
then you'll do as I say!

The Valkyries ride closer.

BEOWULF
Put your weapons down. Put them down!

The Vikings drop their weapons.

XENA
Right.

Xena walks out to meet the Valkyries. Waltraute dismounts and draws her sword.

XENA
There will be no blood shed here today!

WALTRAUTE
Long time no see, Xena. I'd like to catch up, but
I'm afraid killing you is gonna make that a bit difficult.

XENA
I'll not fight you.

WALTRAUTE
Yeah, right.

She attacks Xena, and Xena's reflections kick in. The Vikings move to help, but Beowulf stops them. Odin rides in from the sky and watches Waltraute fight Xena.

ODIN
Enough!

Odin rides in from the ocean.

EXTRA
It's Odin!

ODIN
I said enough! (to horse) Whoa. Whoa.

The Vikings all kneel, except for Beowulf who hauls Wiglaf back to his feet. Odin dismounts and moves over to Xena.

ODIN
Xena...this isn't much of a reunion.

XENA
You can kill me if you want, but I am not the Warrior
Princess you seek.

WALTRAUTE
You heard the woman, Odin! Kill her!

ODIN
Silence, Waltraute! If you're not Xena, who are you?

XENA
I don't know.

ODIN
Do you know who I am?

XENA
She said your name is Odin, but I don't know you
from your horse.

He looks at her.

ODIN
Waltraute...return to Valhalla at once.

Waltraute sneers as she mounts her horse.

ODIN
Leave these noble warriors to their mission.

The Valkyries ride off.

EXTRA
Yah! Yah! Yah-h-h-h!

They take to the sky. Odin mounts his horse.

ODIN
Yah-h-h-h-h!

Odin takes to the sky and rides off.

XENA
See? We saw them off without violence.

BEOWULF
Only because he considers you more valuable
alive than dead. He'll be back soon enough.

Beowulf moves off.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Valhalla.

ODIN
You're upset, because I didn't kill Xena.

WALTRAUTE
I'm upset my lord has lost his mind. Have you
forgotten Xena has the power to kill gods?

ODIN
No, but she has and with all her memories gone,
so are her motivations. Once she has retrieved
the ring from the flames, it will be very easy to
wrest it from her.

WALTRAUTE
Odin, you intend to keep the ring for yourself?
Only those who have forsaken love can use it.

She reaches out her hand to him and he takes it like she is a child.

ODIN
What can I say? My heart is hardened.

WALTRAUTE
No, you promised that ring to me. You love me.

Odin laughs.
ODIN
I love no one and once I've secured that ring from
Xena, I will fear nothing.

WALTRAUTE
Grinhilda will never let-

ODIN
Grinhilda will do nothing to stop Xena, because
you and the other Valkyrie will make certain nothing
stops Xena from getting to that ring. Hm-m?

Odin chuckles then leaves. The other Valkyries enter.

WALTRAUTE
On my life, Xena will die before she gets close
enough to those flames to singe an eyebrow.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Xena is in a tent. She removes her wedding ring and drops it. The wind blows. She sees a vision of Gabrielle.

XENA
Are you a demon...or own mind made mad?

GABRIELLE
I am the truth of who you are. Our souls are united, Xena.

The vision touches her face and Xena leaps to her feet. Beowulf enters.

BEOWULF
Xena?

He sees that she is distraught.

BEOWULF
Xena...are you all right?

She sits.

XENA
Yes. This Gabrielle truly loved Xena, didn't she?

BEOWULF
And will till the end of time. Gabrielle saved you
from what you were, as you must now save her.

XENA
I've heard the men talking. They say that Xena
created this monster that awaits us.

BEOWULF
Grinhilda.

XENA
It's true, then.

BEOWULF
I have waited a long time to return this to you.

He hands her the chakram.

XENA
What's it for?

BEOWULF
You'll know. When the time comes, you'll know.

She takes it.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Eastwind bog.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mist.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Beowulf leads Xena, Wiglaf and the other Vikings through the bog to the ring of fire.

BEOWULF
We're in Grinhilda's domain.

Xena looks at Gabrielle.

XENA
Beowulf, if I'm not the one...

BEOWULF
You are. Brunnhilda's flame will recognize you
as Gabrielle's soul mate.

Xena moves towards the fire. Brunnhilda's face appears in the flames.

BRUNNHILDA (voice-over)
Xena...Xena...

Brunnhilda's face appears in the flame.

BRUNNHILDA
The love in your heart burns stronger than any
flame. You belong together, Xena.

Xena reaches her hand out to the flames. The Valkyries attack. Xena battles Waltraute. She flips over her.

XENA
Hi-i-i-i-i-yah!

Xena, Beowulf, Wiglaf and the Vikings battle the Valkyries.

XENA
Hi-i-i-i-yah!

Xena battles Waltraute. Waltraute cuts Xena's arm.

WALTRAUTE
It makes me sick to see you've grown so soft.

XENA
Softness and weakness are two different things.
I have no quarrel with you. I'm here only for Gabrielle!

WALTRAUTE
You sound like one of those pathetic lovesick
boys who burned themselves to a crisp.

Waltraute hits her and knocks her down.

WIGLAF
Xena!

He tosses her his sword and she catches it. Sieglinda rises to her feet and draws a dagger.

XENA
Wiglaf!

Sieglinda throws it and it catches Wiglaf in the chest.

BEOWULF
Wiglaf!

Beowulf moves to him. Xena battles Waltraute with new fury. Waltraute gets her to the ground.

WALTRAUTE
I've waited a long time for this.

XENA
Wait longer.

Xena kicks her into the flame and she burns to nothing. Beowulf knocks out Sieglinda. Beowulf moves to Xena.

BEOWULF
Xena, you must go now. Go, or all this is for nothing.
A-a-ah. Ugh...

He's stabbed through the shoulder by one of Monster Grinhilda's claws and she lifts him off of the ground.

END OF ACT THREE

ACT FOUR

Beowulf is on Monster Grinhilda's claw. Xena looks at her in shock.

BEOWULF
Xena, go. Gabrielle needs you. Xena, go-o-o-o-o!

Beowulf groans. Xena jumps through the fire and clips of Xena and Gabrielle flash in the flames. Xena lands before Gabrielle and moves over to her. She uses the chakram to cut the branches away from Gabrielle and then leans in and kisses her gently on the lips.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Clips from "Sins of the Past," "Between the Lines" "The Abyss" and "Sins of the Past."

XENA (voice-over)
You're my best friend, my family.

GABRIELLE (voice-over)
Hey, I just saved your life! I'm not the little girl that
my parents wanted me to be.

XENA (voice-over)
It's hard to be alone.

GABRIELLE (voice-over)
You're not alone.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Xena pulls back from Gabrielle, dressed suddenly in her armour, her sword on her back. Gabrielle awakens and rises.

GABRIELLE
Xena.

She hugs Xena.

XENA
Oh, Gabrielle.

GABRIELLE
I dreamed you'd come back for me.

XENA
It was like I was in a dream, too. I forgot everything.
But even though I didn't remember you...I felt your
presence...and knew that I would never be complete
unless those shadows were brought into the light.

Monster Grinhilda roars and tosses Beowulf.

XENA
Beowulf!

BRUNNHILDA
Xena...the ring.

GABRIELLE
The ring.

Gabrielle holds out her hand and Xena takes the ring.

GABRIELLE
Xena, don't put it on again.

Monster Grinhilda growls. Xena looks at Monster Grinhilda as the flames burn down and the remaining flames are sucked into the ring.

XENA
I forged this ring. Now I have to use it to undo the
evil it has caused. A-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-she-yah!

She flips towards Monster Grinhilda who knocks her into a cave. Monster Grinhilda follows her in. Xena rises and faces her.

XENA
Grinhilda...listen to me. You weren't always this way.
It was my actions that turned you into this beast.

Monster Grinhilda moves to hit her, but she flips away. Xena holds up the ring.

XENA
Grinhilda...I put the evil into this ring.

Monster Grinhilda takes a swipe at her, but Xena ducks.

XENA
I can undo it, too, if only you-

Monster Grinhilda swipes at her again and Xena flips over her arm.

XENA
Grinhilda, you must listen to me.

The ring begins to glow. Xena looks at it and Monster Grinhilda grabs her and lifts her off of the ground.

XENA
Grinhilda...look inside your heart. Find the woman
you once were. Forgive me. Forgive me. Forgive me!

The ring continues to glow. It's power moves over them. Xena yells and Monster Grinhilda roars.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Gabrielle helps up Beowulf. There is a blinding light from the cave.

GABRIELLE
Xena!

The ground begins to rumble.

GABRIELLE
Go!

Fire explodes from the cave.

GABRIELLE
Ah! Ah-h-h! Uh!

BEOWULF
Uh!

Gabrielle looks up and Xena stumbles out of the cave. Gabrielle moves to her and Xena holds up what was the ring, which has been changed back into the Rheingold and smiles. Beowulf moves over to Wiglaf who is sitting up.

BEOWULF
Wiglaf.

Wiglaf sighs.

BEOWULF
Okay?

WIGLAF
Hm-m? Oh, yeah.

Grinhilda steps out of the cave, returned to her turn form.

GABRIELLE
Grinhilda?

XENA
That's right.

Beowulf walks over to them.

XENA
Beowulf, I'll always be indebted to you for bringing
me back here.

BEOWULF
Hey, I needed the best. The legends didn't lie,
Xena, you are the greatest warrior I've ever known.

XENA
Thank you, friend.

Two Valkyries horses are there. Xena touches Grinhilda's shoulder.

XENA
Let's take you home.

Gabrielle hugs Beowulf.

GABRIELLE
Thank you.

Xena and Grinhilda mount the horses.

BEOWULF
I'll miss you.

GABRIELLE
You have a good heart, Beowulf. If it weren't for
you, I'd still be in Brunnhilda's flame.

BEOWULF
I think we both know Xena would have found
you eventually.

He kisses her hand. Gabrielle moves over to Xena.

GABRIELLE
Thank you, Brunnhilda.

BRUNNHILDA (voice-over)
Godspeed, Gabrielle.

Gabrielle smiles and Xena helps her onto the horse.

GABRIELLE
All right.

XENA
Chk-chk. Yah! Get on!

The horses take to the sky.

XENA
Hi-i-i-i-i-i-yah!

Wiglaf moves to Beowulf.

BEOWULF
Not a word, Wiglaf - not a word.

Beowulf moves off.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The horses move through the sky.

XENA
You all right?

GABRIELLE
Yeah.

Grinhilda rides beside. Xena. She looks at her and smiles. Xena smiles back.

GRINHILDA
(to horse) Let's go. Chk-chk.

They ride to Valhalla.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Valhalla. Xena enters and moves toe the banquet table. Two Valkyries put their spears in front of her.

XENA
Things haven't changed much around here, have they?

Odin turns to see her.

ODIN
Xena? It seems as though you've found yourself again.

XENA
Odin.

He claps and the Valkyries let her by.

ODIN
Perhaps you've decided to return to me that which
belongs in Valhalla - the ring?

XENA
I have brought something back that belongs
here, yes.

Grinhilda and Gabrielle enter.

ODIN
Grinhilda?

XENA
Grinhilda was the best thing that ever happened
to Valhalla, Odin, before it was poisoned by my bloodlust.

ODIN
What do you want?

GRINHILDA
Return me to my position as chief of the Valkyries.

XENA
She'll teach them a nobler use for their powers, Odin.

ODIN
I'll think about it.

She moves closer to him.

XENA
Don't think too long.

Odin looks at Xena for a moment and then to Grinhilda.

ODIN
Welcome back, Grinhilda.

Xena moves over to Gabrielle.

XENA
Thirty-five years ago - the shame of it makes if
feel like it was yesterday.

Xena and Gabrielle start to move off.

GABRIELLE
Memories are powerful, Xena. I'm so thankful that
yours brought you back to me.

XENA
But there's one that's still troubling me.

Grinhilda hugs Odin.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Rhein.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Xena swims.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Xena rises from the water before the Rhein Maidens.

FIRST RHEIN MAIDEN
Stay back, Xena! You took all we had years ago!

XENA
I know. I came to apologize...
She holds up the gold.

XENA
...and to bring you this.

She swims over to the rock. Gabrielle walks in from a side ledge (although she didn't swim in) Xena hands the gold to First Rhein Maiden.

XENA
It belongs to you.

First Rhein Maiden gasps and takes it.

FIRST RHEIN MAIDEN
What magic has made Xena into such a noble
creature, that she would give up the power of
the Rheingold?

XENA
It wasn't magic.

Xena looks to Gabrielle who smiles.
